The US Air Force Research Laboratory tested SpaceX's Starfall orbital cargo pod, evaluating environmental telemetry including radiation, shock, and vibration on onboard electronics during a successful Pacific Ocean cargo delivery.
The test took place on October 20. The launch took place from a station in Florida and the capsule successfully landed at a predetermined point in the Pacific Ocean. The goal was to see if such systems could send materials within a few hours to areas without roads or airports.
What did the capsule carry?
Inside the capsule were emergency supplies, medical equipment, batteries and special positioning devices. At the same time, researchers recorded how temperature, vibration and radiation affected the electronic systems and means of communication.
According to officials, the system has the ability to transport dozens of tons of cargo to any point on the planet with each launch.
Where can it be used?
Although the technology was designed primarily for military needs, officials note that it could also be used to respond to natural disasters or other serious crises.
