Developers are using AI assistants like Claude Code and GitHub projects like 'dumbtv' to strip ads, bloatware, and custom launchers from smart TVs.
Explore how open-source scripts are being applied to clean up vendor interfaces, alongside the risks of automation.
Modern TVs often fill the screen with ads, slow menus, and features that track users' viewing habits. To address this, developers and ordinary users are leveraging advanced artificial intelligence systems, such as Claude Code, to clean up their devices' software.
How the process works
Various programs and guides that have appeared on the Internet, such as “dumbtv” and “cleanyourtv”, offer solutions for removing unnecessary software from TVs and Wi-Fi players. However, users are not limited to ready-made solutions. Several report that they simply gave their TV model to an artificial intelligence system and asked to remove ads and change the home screen.
For example, developer Gathin T. used Claude Code to remove 25 apps from his parents’ Xiaomi TV and replace the main menu. Other users, such as Ryan Doyle and Mihir Gupta, have also tried this method to speed up their devices. This method has been tested on devices from many well-known manufacturers, including Xiaomi, TCL, Sony, Fire TV, LG, and Hisense.

Possible difficulties and risks
Despite the positive results reported by several users, the process is not always straightforward. Some found that the AI systems did not respond to simple instructions or made mistakes during the process.
There have also been cases where things haven't gone well. At least one user reported that their TV stopped working altogether, while another got stuck in the middle of trying to change settings on a Fire TV device. For those who prefer safer solutions without the use of artificial intelligence, there are already traditional apps, such as ATV Launcher, Projectivity Launcher, and FLauncher, for customizing smart TVs.
