TikTok has permanently banned the ad account promoting the Musk documentary due to political content violations, while platforms like Meta and YouTube approved the trailer after review.
Bleecker Street, the company that distributes the documentary, had its promotional account on the platform permanently banned. TikTok explained that the decision was due to repeated political content that violated the platform's rules.
The nearly four-hour documentary was directed by Alex Gibney. The film had a limited release on October 9 in just four theaters in New York and Los Angeles, grossing around $70.000 in its opening. Screenings expanded to many more theaters on October 16, and Bleecker Street said it would appeal TikTok’s decision.
How did other platforms react?
The film's promotion has also encountered obstacles on other social media platforms. Meta and YouTube initially blocked ads for the trailer, but eventually allowed it to run. A Meta spokesperson said the initial rejection was a mistake, while YouTube confirmed that the trailer has now been approved.
