The US Department of Homeland Security has banned DeepSeek across federal civilian agencies, requiring immediate software removal and blocking the company from government contracts over data transfer concerns.
The statement said the department believes that DeepSeek's use could lead to sensitive data being transferred to the Chinese government from US government employees and suppliers, and that the company's models may contain malicious code or other security vulnerabilities.
Which services are affected?
Agencies like the Environmental Protection Agency and the Federal Communications Commission are required to block and remove the relevant products from their systems. In addition, the ruling bars DeepSeek from participating in any federal government contracts.
This development comes just days after DeepSeek released the new V4.1-Flash-1017 model. It is worth noting that as early as last year, two members of the US Congress had proposed a bill to ban the company's chatbot from government devices.
