NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Ilana Glazer recently explored the societal implications of AI in a public discussion.
The conversation addressed the balance between technological advancement and public interest, focusing on recent local policies like municipal school AI bans and mandatory disclosure rules for real estate ads.
The discussion highlights growing tension between federal regulatory approaches and the rapid commercialization of AI labs.
The measures in New York
Mamdani has criticized the federal government for its lack of oversight of technology companies. As part of his actions, he last month banned the use of artificial intelligence tools in New York City elementary and middle schools. At the same time, a rule was introduced that requires disclosure of the use of artificial intelligence in photos and videos of real estate listings to avoid misleading interested parties.
Criticism of development and risks
During the event, Mamdani said that overreliance on artificial intelligence can lead to dangerous outcomes. He cited an attack on a school in Iran last February as an example, linking it to the use of such systems.
Mamdani also criticized President Trump’s new task force on artificial intelligence, saying it focuses on self-regulation by companies. His criticism comes as companies like Anthropic and OpenAI prepare to go public in the coming years. Despite the companies’ ambitions, employees at organizations like Anthropic, Google DeepMind, and OpenAI have been outspoken about the risks associated with the technology they are developing.
