Former Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer discussed using an AI assistant app to generate descriptions of her daughter for a presentation, drawing criticism over AI integration in personal life.
The discussion highlights broader industry questions around automated tools and human connection.
Marissa Mayer's use of artificial intelligence applications
Former Yahoo chief and early Google engineer Marissa Mayer has come under fire after an interview with the New York Times. Mayer touted a new AI-powered digital assistant app she created, called Dazzle. She said she used the tool to write three paragraphs describing her 10-year-old daughter for a birthday presentation.
The phrases used, such as “empathetic,” “creative,” and “animal-loving,” were likened by critics to a general horoscope. Progressive activist Leah Greenberg called Mayer’s comments evidence of how far Silicon Valley has moved from human contact.
Mayer later defended herself in a post on Platform X, explaining that she was testing her prototype, which brought up forgotten kindergarten projects to showcase her child's creativity. In the same interview, she even suggested using AI to plan birthday themes, playdates, family activities, and coordinate schedules between parents' digital assistants.
The attitude of other technology leaders
Mayer is not alone in expressing such views. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman previously said on television that he couldn't imagine raising a newborn child without the help of ChatGPT. He later said in a post that a professional version of ChatGPT could be used to create a podcast that would explain upcoming birthdays, toys, and children's interests.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has made similar predictions. In a podcast, he argued that the average person wants more friends than they have and predicted that people will increasingly outsource their emotional needs to digital therapists or romantic partners.
What does the public think?
These views run counter to the majority of the public. According to a Pew Research Center survey, 50% of adults in the United States believe that artificial intelligence will reduce people's ability to build meaningful relationships. In contrast, only 5% believe that this technology will make human connections easier.
