TP-Link plans to assemble next-generation routers in the US following foreign import bans, with production at a Mississippi facility targeted for 2027 pending regulatory approval.
The shift highlights ongoing supply chain adjustments in hardware manufacturing.
The new next-generation routers are expected to be among the first products to be manufactured locally, according to the plans. A TP-Link spokesperson said that many components will continue to come from outside the US, as there are no domestic suppliers available to manufacture them.
The import ban and exceptions
The move comes after the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) declared foreign-made routers a security risk and banned their import. The ban was imposed in March, but stores were able to continue selling devices already on their shelves.
Companies have the option to request a special exemption from the ban if they plan to move some of their production within the country, although TP-Link has not yet received any such approval.
