Ubuntu 26.10 introduces a dedicated Add-ons page in App Center, centralizing the installation of restricted media codecs and proprietary hardware drivers for NVIDIA GPUs and Wi-Fi cards for systems set up offline.
How the new addition works
Until now, if someone didn't choose to install these additional files during the initial installation of the operating system—or if the installation was done offline—they had to search for solutions on their own. The app store wasn't much help in this regard, as it doesn't show system files in search results.
The new add-ons page solves this problem by offering a simple way to install directly from the GUI. Although some music applications, such as Rhythmbox, can display an installation window when files are missing, the process has limitations.
Management for computer hardware as well
In addition to media files, the same add-ons page in Ubuntu 26.10 also hosts an area for managing hardware drivers. This feature helps manage specific programs for NVIDIA graphics cards, specific Wi-Fi network cards, and other selected hardware, replacing older tools that were removed from the default system applications.
