Development on Ubuntu 27.04 Tenacious T-Rex has officially begun, targeting an April 2027 release.

Explore what is planned for the upcoming cycle, including Linux 7.6 kernel integration, GNOME 52, Rust tooling like ntpd-rs, and maturing TPM-backed encryption.

The process officially opened on October 30, 2026, with automatic synchronization from the Debian community testing system. Over the next period, software packages will be continuously updated, building the foundation for the future stable release.

Release schedule

The official release of Ubuntu 27.04 is scheduled for April 22, 2027. A little earlier, on April 1 of the same year, the first test version is expected to be released for those who want to try the changes early.

What is expected to include

During development, those responsible plan major updates and additions to the software. Among them are:

  • The updated GNOME 52 graphical environment.
  • The Linux 7.6 kernel, which is the heart of the operating system.
  • More tools written in the Rust programming language, including a new time synchronization tool.
  • Acceleration in the development of a special version of the operating system based exclusively on standalone application packages, which will initially be offered as a test option.

Thoughts on artificial intelligence and security

The company is also looking at adding AI capabilities directly to the device. Plans include the possibility of integrating a voice dictation tool that would only be activated if the user chooses to do so, as well as ideas for AI features on the desktop, based on previous testing.
