Ubuntu Touch: Two new updates with security fixes and support for 8 new phones

UBports has announced Ubuntu Touch 24.04-2.1 and 24.04-1.5, patching vulnerabilities that could let unprivileged apps execute privileged operations without authentication.

The release adds support for eight new devices, updates Morph Browser to QtWebEngine 6.11.2 based on Chromium 140, bumps Waydroid to 1.6.3, and includes various system and notification fixes.

Support for new devices

Version 24.04-2.1 adds official support for eight more models. These are the Nothing Phone (1), OnePlus Nord N10 and N100, the Volla Tablet, as well as the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro (Global), Redmi Note 9S/9 Pro (India), Redmi Note 9 Pro Max, and Poco M2 Pro.

Improvements to applications and functions

Morph Browser has been updated with newer code, which improves tab switching and restores the ability for users to use personal scripts. In addition, the following improvements have been made:

  • Notifications work more reliably.
  • Fixed an issue with the system clock that affected the time zone.
  • The on-screen keyboard now works properly with Libertine apps.
  • Fixed an issue with the mouse cursor appearing after rotating the screen.
  • Fixed the flashlight switch for Volla Phone Plinius.
  • The Waydroid tool, which allows the use of Android applications, has been updated to version 1.6.3 with improvements to window management and fixes for Android 16 system images.

Security issues

The UBports team has fixed security vulnerabilities that could allow unprivileged applications to perform actions that would normally require authentication. Version 24.04-1.5, which targets devices running the older 24.04-1.x series, includes the same security fixes and functional improvements.

What to look out for when upgrading

According to the creators, some problems may arise during the process:

  • Some users upgrading to the 24.04-2.x series may experience Morph Browser not opening. A temporary fix has been released for this issue.
  • Pixel 3a and 3a XL owners may experience a failure when upgrading to version 24.04-1.5, which is usually resolved by restarting and trying again.

Updates are gradually available through System Settings.
