Users report that Android Auto cannot place outgoing calls when some foldable phones are closed, while incoming calls appear to work.
Reports mainly concern Motorola Razr Ultra 60 and 70 devices on Android 16.
A link to Gemini use remains unconfirmed; Google and Motorola are investigating, with no official fix announced.
Most reports concern the Motorola Razr Ultra 60 and 70 running Android 16. In a post in April, a user reported a similar issue on the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 and said that calls were working normally before he started using Gemini.
One Reddit user said that when he tried to make a call with his phone folded, a message appeared asking him to open it to continue the call. Another user reported that he was able to make outgoing calls with his phone folded again after switching back from Gemini to Google Assistant.
Google and Motorola appear to be investigating the issue, with representatives asking for information on their forums. Neither company has announced an official fix. For now, the only workaround mentioned is to unlock the phone before making a call.
The return to Google Assistant is not available to everyone. Google retired the service from phones, tablets, and other devices in September 2026. The transition from Google Assistant began on September 4 and only affects phones that meet the minimum requirements to use Google's artificial intelligence service.
