Rivian and Volkswagen are expanding their automotive software partnership to integrate Rivian's custom-built AI voice assistant into future vehicles, backed by a $5.8 billion joint investment commitment.
The development was revealed during Rivian's investor presentation on Thursday. The total combined investment between the two companies reaches $5,8 billion, with the deal expanding to include elements of Rivian's digital voice assistant.
What do we know about future cars?
Rivian did not disclose licensing fees, payment terms or which Volkswagen vehicles will use the technology. However, the voice assistant may first appear in Volkswagen's affordable electric car called the ID EVERY1. That vehicle is expected to be the German brand's first to use Rivian's software and electrical architecture.
How the digital assistant works
Rivian developed the AI assistant for two years before launching it in September 2026 on the R1S, R1T and R2 models. The company's CEO, RJ Scaringe, said they created a proprietary system that understands user commands and routes them to the correct software in the car.
