Wall Street investors demand proof of sustainability for AI spending

An analysis of Big Tech financial results highlights contrasting approaches to AI capital expenditures.

While Microsoft and Oracle gained market confidence by balancing investments without continuous borrowing, companies like Alphabet faced heavy stock corrections after spending over 100% of operating cash flows on infrastructure.

Microsoft and Oracle have won investors’ trust by demonstrating better management. Microsoft posted strong free cash flow of $18,6 billion in the fiscal first quarter, beating estimates, with its Azure cloud storage and computing service up 48%. At the same time, the company allocated 68% of its operating cash flow to infrastructure investments, maintaining lower debt exposure than its competitors. Oracle, meanwhile, announced plans to limit external financing, estimating positive cash flow in the second half of fiscal 2028, which pushed its stock higher.

In contrast, Alphabet was punished by the markets with its stock plunging more than 12% as it allocated 121,4% of its operating cash flow to capital expenditures in the September quarter, burning through $9,07 billion in cash. At the same time, Google's search revenue growth slowing to 12% intensified concerns that competition from automated chat systems is affecting the company's main source of revenue. Amazon also fell, burning through cash and announcing a subdued outlook despite strong revenue growth from cloud services and triple-digit growth in artificial intelligence.
