Waymo and Toyota are partnering to integrate Waymo's autonomous driving system into factory-manufactured Toyota bZ4X vehicles, starting with testing in Japan next year and future deployments in international markets like the U.K.
Toyota will build the 2027 bZ4X vehicles at its plant in Takaoka, Japan, and will integrate Waymo's self-driving system into them. In the North American market, this electric vehicle is marketed as the BZ. Testing of the new autonomous cars will begin in Japan next year, with the ultimate goal of operating a passenger transportation service.
Expansion to Great Britain and other countries
Waymo plans to use these vehicles in other countries where driving is on the left side of the road, such as Great Britain. In London, the company has been testing autonomous Jaguar I-Pace cars for months and plans to launch a taxi service once it secures the necessary permits.
The official announcement comes 18 months after an initial agreement was signed between the two companies in April 2025. Hiroki Nakajima, Toyota's vice president and board member, is involved in the developments.
