Waymo is preparing to test its autonomous cars in Canada

Waymo is expanding into Canada through Ontario's automated vehicle pilot.

Operations begin with manual street mapping in Toronto, progressing to autonomous road tests with safety operators and future fleet scaling.

The company announced this in a post on Friday, October 16, 2026. The process will be gradual and does not mean that residents will be able to immediately call a taxi without a driver.

Next steps on the streets of Toronto

The cars will initially be driven by drivers in Toronto to create detailed maps of local roads. The vehicles will then be tested on public roads with a safety officer inside for inspection purposes.

In a next stage, the safety driver will be completely removed from the driver's seat and, finally, the service will be opened to the public.

The expansion path and winter conditions

Waymo already offers driverless taxi services in fifteen cities in the United States and is conducting tests in areas such as London and Tokyo.

The company's co-CEO, Tekedra Mawakana, noted the development. Toronto is the northernmost and likely winteriest city the company has operated in so far, which will test its technology in more challenging weather conditions.

Waymo is partnering with local company Element Fleet Management to manage its fleet in the city. The partnership is expected to support hundreds of jobs in vehicle maintenance, test driving, customer service and general operations.
