What do the lights on your Netgear router at home mean?

A technical breakdown of front-facing indicator lights and symbols on Netgear routers and Orbi mesh systems, detailing power states, firmware statuses, internet connectivity, Wi-Fi band traffic, Ethernet speeds, and Orbi LED codes.

The basic operation and connection lights

The main lights concern power, internet connection and wireless network:

  • Power light: Indicates whether the device is ready. It is solid green or white when everything is OK, turns orange when the device is turned on, and flashes orange during updates or reboots. If it is flashing white, there is a problem with the device's internal software, while if it is flashing white and orange alternately, the device is operating as an access point.
  • Internet light: Indicates the connection to the modem. If it is off, there is no connection. It is solid green or white when everything is working properly, and flashes white when data is being transferred.
  • Wireless network light: Indicates Wi-Fi activity. When solid white, the transmitters are active, while when blinking, there is active data traffic. Depending on the model, there are separate lights for the 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz frequency bands with similar indications.

Ports, cables and special connections

There are also port lights on the back or front of the device:

  • Ethernet ports: They have numbers for each port. White or green indicates a fast connection, while orange indicates a slower speed.
  • USB ports: They indicate the connection status for each port, lighting up when the device is ready and blinking when an external device is trying to connect.
  • Quick connection (WPS): It indicates the success of connecting a device without a password, staying steady when successful and blinking while the process is in progress.

The lights on signal extension systems

In the same company's mesh systems, known as Orbi, the design is simpler with lights on the front and back:

  • Front light: It shows the connection quality. Blue indicates a very good connection, orange a moderate one, and purple means there is no connection at all.
  • Tail light: Indicates operating status. It is solid green when on, amber when restarting, flashes amber during updates, and flashes red when there is a possible hardware or connection problem.
