Explore how the Roku remote leverages a contextual star button to handle multi-purpose tasks across different screens, from app management and input renaming to quick accessibility toggles.
Its function is not fixed, but changes depending on where you are on the screen at any given time.
What does it do on the home screen?
When you're on the Roku home screen and have an app selected, tapping the star gives you a number of options. You can view the app's version, change its position on the screen, remove it, rate it, send feedback, or check for updates.
If you're using a Roku TV and have selected an external device, such as a game console, the button allows you to rename it.

What does it do while watching videos?
When you're watching a video on a Roku TV, tapping the star opens a menu on the side of the screen with viewing options. There, you can adjust the picture quality, set a sleep timer, turn on subtitles, and adjust the volume. Roku's basic streaming devices offer fewer options in this menu than TV models.
Shortcut for reading text
The star button also serves as a quick shortcut for a feature that reads text on the screen aloud, aiding accessibility.
Tapping the star four times in quick succession toggles the feature on or off. The feature is currently only available in the United States and is supported on many of the company's devices, including Roku TVs, Streambars, and Smart Soundbars, as well as streaming device lines like the Express, Express 4K, Streaming Stick, Premiere, and Ultra.
