Automated dialing systems and AI tools are leveraging brief voice responses from silent phone calls to extract demographic traits, accents, and behavioral data, raising new challenges in synthetic voice generation and scam profiling.
In the most innocent cases, silence is due to someone having a problem with their microphone, a Bluetooth headset that disconnected, or a call center delaying getting an available representative. However, automated systems and artificial intelligence are often used to check whether a number is active, while also recording the recipient's reaction.
When you respond with “Yes” or “Please,” AI can analyze features like your accent, geographic region, age, and gender, assessing your likelihood of responding to future scams. Even a few seconds of recorded speech can be collected to create fake voice transcripts, which scammers use to impersonate family members or colleagues in later attacks.
To protect yourself from such practices, it is a good idea to follow basic safety rules:
- Do not answer calls from hidden or unknown numbers.
- Do not call back unknown numbers to avoid possible charges.
- Don't speak first; wait for the caller to greet you and end the call immediately if there is silence.
- Block suspicious numbers using your mobile settings.
- Avoid giving your personal number to dubious websites and consider using a secondary number for everyday transactions.
