A technical look at how antivirus software impacts system performance, comparing legacy signature database scans and competing background processes with modern cloud-based checks, idle-time processing, and multi-core resource distribution.
Older programs compared files against large lists of known viruses. Older hard drives could slow down because they had to constantly switch back and forth between files and scan information. At the same time, additional features—such as computer connection monitoring, spam filtering, and parental controls—often ran separately and competed for limited computer resources.
This could make the computer noticeably slower. Some users would disable the program to gain speed and probably never turn it back on. When a security program is disabled, it cannot protect the computer.
Today, programs reduce this burden in various ways. For example, they can perform some checks through online services and skip files that have already been identified as safe. Additional functions work better together, while some programs reduce their activity when other tasks require more resources.

Newer computers have also helped: faster disks and processors with more cores have reduced lag. Windows also offers ways to more efficiently control files, scripts, and content that programs are currently using.
The impact on speed varies from program to program, which is why independent organizations also evaluate this factor. AV-Test gives up to six points for low computer load. AV-Comparatives uses ratings from "Tested" and "Standard" to "Advanced" and "Advanced+". Seven of the programs monitored by the author received six points from AV-Test and the "Advanced+" rating from AV-Comparatives.
Some packages also include tools that clean up unnecessary files or browsing traces. Bitdefender Total Security and Norton AntiVirus Plus have simple cleaning functions. Avast Ultimate includes Avast Cleanup Premium, while Avira Prime includes Avira System Speedup Pro.
You don't have to choose Microsoft Defender just because you're afraid another program will slow down your computer. You can base your choice on cost, lab test scores, and the features you need. In any case, don't disable protection to gain speed.
