Why your new calculation shows less storage space

An examination of storage capacity discrepancies between decimal-based hardware manufacturing and binary-based operating systems like Windows, alongside the growing footprint of modern operating systems and apps on device storage.

Disk manufacturers calculate capacity using the decimal system, where a kilobyte is 1.000 bytes and a gigabyte is 1 billion bytes. On the other hand, operating systems like Windows calculate space using the binary system, where a kilobyte is 1.024 bytes, and calculations are based on that number. As the numbers get bigger, this mathematical difference creates a significant discrepancy. A 1-terabyte disk may appear to Windows to hold only 931 gigabytes, even though all of that space is available on Mac computers that use decimal calculations. Microsoft has no intention of switching Windows to decimal, nor does Apple plan to return its products to binary, and special terms created to clarify the difference have not won over the world.

In addition to the mathematical difference, a large part of the available space is taken up by the device's system itself, which grows larger every year as it acquires new features. For example, the software on a modern mobile phone can consume over 22 gigabytes, while Windows 11 takes up over 81 gigabytes on a PC. In addition, devices need additional free space and temporary files to be able to function smoothly.
