YouTube is reportedly preparing an audiobook service for next year, entering discussions with publishers and exploring subscription bundling options against established competitors.
YouTube has yet to officially confirm its plans. Reports suggest the company is considering bundling audiobooks with its $16-a-month subscription service. Since the plan is still in development, it remains unclear whether the subscription will cover a full month of listening or whether the books will be sold separately.
Unauthorized books on the platform
There are already audiobook channels on YouTube, some of which feature copyrighted titles. A growing problem on the platform is the proliferation of unauthorized audio recordings produced automatically using artificial intelligence and robotic voices.
If the new service does launch, it will have to compete with established options like Spotify and Audible. Its success will directly depend on its library and price competitiveness.
