Hi Dev Community! 👋
I’m a 2024 B.Tech graduate in Computer Science, and currently, I’m working as an Automation Tester. With 7 months of professional experience under my belt, I’ve gained valuable insights into the testing domain. However, I’ve realized that my true passion lies in development.
How I Got Here
Like many fresh graduates, I landed in the automation testing field somewhat randomly. It’s been a fantastic learning experience, helping me hone skills like debugging, understanding test automation frameworks, and improving my problem-solving capabilities. But the more I work in this field, the stronger my urge grows to create, innovate, and contribute directly as a developer.
Why I Want to Switch
Love for Building Things: Writing code that solves real-world problems or creates impactful applications excites me.
Interest in Development Technologies: During my time in testing, I’ve worked with various tools and frameworks, which gave me glimpses of the development side—and I want to dive deeper.
Continuous Learning: I’m always eager to explore new languages, frameworks, and paradigms. Development offers endless opportunities for growth and innovation.
My Current Skill Set
Programming Languages: Python, Java, and C++.
Automation: Experience in automation testing for mobile and web apps.
Frameworks: Hands-on exposure to tools like Selenium, Appium, and CI/CD pipelines.
AI/ML Enthusiast: I’ve worked on projects involving pose estimation, object detection, and AI-based solutions.
My Plan for the Transition
Strengthening Core Development Skills: Revisiting data structures, algorithms, and design principles.
Building Side Projects: Creating full-stack applications to showcase my development skills.
Learning In-Demand Tools: Gaining expertise in frameworks like React, Node.js, and backend technologies.
Networking and Guidance: Learning from the amazing dev community on platforms like Dev.to!
A Question for You
To those who’ve transitioned from testing to development—or started as developers—I would love to hear your insights:
How to switch from SDET to SDE?
What is the best time to switch?
Is this switch even possible?
What challenges did you face during the switch, and how did you overcome them?
What advice would you give someone in my position?
I’m open to suggestions, guidance, or just a little nudge in the right direction. Let’s connect and learn from each other’s experiences. 😊
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts! Thanks for reading.
