Brand loyalty in AI just died, and that is good news for freelancers

Something quietly historic happened this spring: for the first time, ChatGPT was no longer the majority of the AI market.

Similarweb clocked OpenAI's share below 50% in May. In the same window, Anthropic passed it in business subscriptions and self-reported revenue. The obvious headline is "Claude is winning." I think that misses the real shift.

The real shift: switching is free now

People have stopped marrying a single assistant. They switch models like they switch browser tabs. One week Claude writes the cleaner code, the next week a new GPT ships and steals the task back, then Gemini undercuts both on a long-context job. The moment something better ships, the old default gets fired.

Brand loyalty in AI is basically dead. And for anyone who works for themselves, that is a gift.

Why this helps freelancers and solo operators

  • You are not locked in. The $20/month you pay is a monthly lease, not a marriage. Cancel the second a better tool appears.
  • The best tool per task beats the best brand. Stop optimizing your workflow around "I use ChatGPT." Optimize around "what is sharpest for this job this month."
  • Your leverage is knowing the field, not defending a favorite. The freelancer who tests three models on a real task and picks the winner will out-ship the one who defends their tribe.

A simple rule of thumb

Every month, take one real task you do often, a client email, a code refactor, a proposal, and run it through two or three current models side by side. Keep the winner as your default for that task until the next test. That is the entire strategy. Loyalty costs you money; testing pays you back.

I do this in the open and publish head-to-head results, no hype, at AI Tools Insider. If you want the one-story-a-day version, I run a plain-English AI news channel on Telegram at t.me/aitoolsinsiderhq.

The tools will keep leapfrogging each other. The winners will be the people who keep switching.
