Docker error messages are famously unhelpful: exec format error, no matching manifest, COPY failed. Most of them have the same handful of causes. Here are the ones I see people lose an afternoon to, fix first.
1. Cannot connect to the Docker daemon at unix:///var/run/docker.sock. Is the docker daemon running?
sudo systemctl start docker # Linux
sudo systemctl enable docker # start on boot
On Mac/Windows, Docker Desktop simply isn't running. Start it and wait for the whale icon to settle. In WSL2, enable your distro under Settings → Resources → WSL integration.
2. permission denied while trying to connect to the Docker daemon socket
The daemon is running, but your user can't talk to it.
sudo usermod -aG docker $USER
newgrp docker # or log out and back in
Be aware that the docker group is effectively root access to the machine.
3. exec format error / no matching manifest for linux/arm64/v8
Architecture mismatch. You're on Apple Silicon or ARM and the image was built for amd64, or the other way round.
docker run --platform linux/amd64 some/image # emulate (slower)
docker buildx build --platform linux/amd64,linux/arm64 -t you/app --push .
If it's your image and it fails with exec format error only in production, you probably built it on an M1/M2 Mac and deployed to an x86 server. Build with --platform linux/amd64.
4. COPY failed: file not found in build context
COPY paths are relative to the build context (the . in docker build .), not the Dockerfile, and they can't reach ../. Also check .dockerignore: a stray * or config/ silently drops files.
docker build -f app/Dockerfile . # build from the parent folder instead
5. Bind for 0.0.0.0:5432 failed: port is already allocated
Something on the host (often a local Postgres or an old container) already has that port.
docker ps --filter "publish=5432"
sudo lsof -i :5432
Stop it, or map a different host port: -p 5433:5432.
6. no space left on device
Docker never cleans up after itself. See what's eating space, then prune:
docker system df
docker system prune # stopped containers, dangling images, unused networks
docker builder prune # build cache, often the biggest one
Add -a and --volumes only if you understand that it deletes unused images and volume data.
7. standard_init_linux.go: exec user process caused: no such file or directory
The file exists. What's missing is its interpreter. Usually either:
- your entrypoint script has Windows line endings (
#!/bin/sh\r). Fix it withsed -i 's/\r$//' entrypoint.shor a.gitattributesrule*.sh text eol=lf, or - you copied a binary built against glibc into an Alpine (musl) image. Build with
CGO_ENABLED=0or use a Debian-based image.
8. docker-compose: command not found
Compose v1 is retired. It's now a plugin with a space:
docker compose up -d
If that fails too, install docker-compose-plugin.
Longer write-ups for each of these, plus Kubernetes errors like CrashLoopBackOff and ImagePullBackOff, are at errorfix.surge.sh/docker. It's a free, ad-free site organized by exact error message.
