Systems Fail When Nothing Pushes Back

What is happening
AI systems continue operating even when conditions change.
Outputs still look correct.
Interactions repeat.
Nothing interrupts the loop.
So it continues.
Then behavior starts to shift.
This is Behavioral Drift.
What it means
A system doesn’t need to break to fail.
It just needs to continue without enforcement.
Each interaction either:
holds the Decision Boundary
or weakens it
If nothing pushes back, weakening compounds.
Not suddenly.
Over time.
What breaks
Most systems rely on visibility:
logs
dashboards
alerts
They show state.
They do not enforce behavior.
So:
Decision Boundary is not enforced
Escalation is not triggered
Stop Authority is not applied
The system continues.
That’s the problem.
What to do
Governance must exist during execution.
Not before.
Not after.
During.
This requires:

Clear conditions enforced in runtime
Escalation
Triggered when boundaries are approached
Stop Authority
Ability to halt or redirect immediately
Without these, systems default to continuation.
