The video everyone is sending around
Someone sent me the reel. You have probably seen it too. Big text, upbeat voice, one promise: a free cloud server from Oracle with 12 GB of RAM, forever.
Here is the twist. The reel is right. Mostly by accident.
Oracle cut its free ARM allowance in half this year. That 12 GB is the new number. Most written guides still promise 4 cores and 24 GB. That is not outdated. It is wrong.
What Oracle actually gives you now
Always Free is real and permanent. But around June 15, 2026, the ARM part shrank to this:
- 2 OCPU total. An OCPU is one real processor core slice.
- 12 GB RAM total.
- 1,500 OCPU-hours and 9,000 GB-hours a month, enough to run that full size all month.
You also get 2 small AMD VMs (1 GB each), 200 GB of block storage (your server's disk) and 10 TB a month of egress, meaning data leaving the cloud.
From August 18, Oracle enforced it. Instances still sized above the new limit were terminated.
For an agent, 12 GB is room for its tools, a browser and its memory files. It is a working desk, not a toy. The box calls a hosted model; the hands-on work your agent does happens here.
Why an agent wants this box
A free server is not a toy. It is a night-shift worker that never asks for overtime.
An AI agent is a program that uses an AI model to decide the next step, then takes it. Two cores and 12 GB will not run a big model locally, and they do not need to. The box calls a hosted model and does the hands-on work.
Here is how I run mine. All night, it:
- Watches dashboards and flags anything drifting from normal.
- Runs nightly checks: certificates near expiry, disks filling up, backups that never finished.
- Retries the boring jobs, like a flaky sync or a failed script, and notes why.
- Drafts the morning report: what ran, what failed, what needs a human.
- Keeps a heartbeat: steady, useful work so the box never looks idle.
The human's job is short. Set the rules once: what the agent may fix, what it may only report, when it must stop and wait. Then read the report with breakfast.
The agent watches and retries. You keep the decisions. A free box is a safe place to practise: small stakes, zero bill.
The five traps nobody puts in the video
Every free thing has fine print. Here is Oracle's.
- "Out of host capacity." The free ARM shape is often full in your region. Retrying is normal. It doesn't mean you did something wrong. An agent can retry capacity for you while you sleep.
- Home region is forever. Free compute only runs in the region you pick at signup. Pick the region your agent will live in: it cannot move later.
- Idle reclamation. If CPU, network and memory all stay under 20% for 7 days, Oracle can take the box back. That's why your agent needs a heartbeat job doing real work.
- Trial-end trap. When the $300, 30-day trial (select countries) ends, anything sized above Always Free gets disabled. Size your agent's box inside the limits from day one.
- Real credit card required. Oracle only places a verification hold, but it won't accept prepaid, virtual or single-use cards.
Everyone else, in one breath
Google Cloud gives you one e2-micro VM forever: a shared core, 1 GB RAM, 30 GB disk, US regions only, 1 GB a month out. Permanent, but too small to hold a real agent and its tools. AWS changed its free tier in July 2025: new accounts get $100 credit plus up to $100 more, and after up to 6 months the account closes unless you upgrade. The old 12 months of free EC2 is gone, so for an agent it is a home with an eviction date. Azure gives $200 for 30 days, then 12 months of free VM hours, then the meter. For agents, a fine season of experiments, then rent. DigitalOcean, Vultr and Linode offer trial credits only. Nothing stays free. For an agent, that is a hotel room, not a home.
So the real question behind this comparison is simple: which of these boxes can an AI agent still call home next year? An agent needs a stable home. Its memory files live there. Its tools live there. Its habits, the jobs it knows and the logs it learns from, live there too. Move it every few months and you rebuild its whole world each time. Credits run out. Homes don't.
Everything is on one card below. Save it.
The verdict
Oracle still wins for a free-forever agent box. Smaller than the legend. Bigger than every rival.
So here is my question: if a free night-shift agent started on your box tonight, what's the first job you would hand it?

I'd also love to hear what's already running on your free boxes tonight. Real setups beat every guide.
