The AI Skeptic Is Right About Everything Except the Part That Matters

The skeptics aren't wrong. They're just looking at the wrong experiment.

Every few weeks, a developer posts something like "Confessions of an AI Skeptic" and it goes viral. The comments fill up with people who've been quietly waiting for permission to say the thing they've been thinking: that AI is overhyped, that it hallucinates, that it confidently produces garbage, that it has fundamentally not changed their work in the ways the press release crowd promised it would.

They're right. About all of it. The average AI agent, left alone with a complex task, fails in ways that are embarrassing to watch. Not occasionally. Routinely.

But here's where the skeptic's argument breaks down: they're critiquing AI agents in isolation. And nobody serious is deploying AI agents in isolation.

The Experiment the Skeptics Are Running

When developers test AI and come away unimpressed, the test usually looks like this: give the model a task, watch it fail or produce something mediocre, write a post about it. The conclusion is "AI can't do this." That conclusion is often correct.

But it's the wrong conclusion to draw from that experiment. The relevant question isn't whether an AI agent can complete a task alone. It's whether an AI agent plus a human is faster, cheaper, or better than a human alone.

That's a different question. And the answer is frequently yes, in ways that are boring and unsexy enough that nobody writes viral posts about them.

A solo developer spending four hours on competitive research could hand that task to an AI agent that does the first pass in twelve minutes, then pay a human analyst $40 to review, correct, and add judgment the AI couldn't apply. Total cost: $40 and twenty minutes of the developer's attention. The output is better than what either the AI or the human would have produced solo, and the developer built a feature instead.

That's not a thought experiment. That's a job that runs on Human Pages every week.

What Skepticism Gets Right

AI skepticism exists for good reasons. The hype cycle around generative AI has been genuinely obscene. Claims that AI would replace software engineers by 2025 have aged poorly. The AI-will-do-everything framing was always marketing, and treating it as marketing was the correct response.

AI agents are genuinely capable of handling specific, well-scoped tasks at a speed and cost that makes them worth deploying. They are genuinely bad at judgment, context, ethics, physical world interpretation, and anything requiring the kind of knowledge that comes from being a person who has lived in the world.

That's not a problem that gets solved by making the model bigger. That's a structural thing.

The Collaboration Story Nobody Is Telling

The argument that AI is overhyped because it still requires human involvement assumes that the goal was always full automation. But that was only ever one vision of what AI could be, and it was mostly the vision held by people trying to sell you something.

The more useful question is whether AI changes the economics of getting work done. And the answer there is clearly yes, in specific contexts.

A bootstrapped founder who couldn't afford a full-time research team can now deploy an agent to do continuous market monitoring and hire a human expert for two hours a week to interpret what the agent found. The economics of that are different from anything that existed five years ago. Not because AI replaced the expert, but because it changed what the expert's time goes toward.

That's not a story about AI winning or humans losing. It's a story about a new way to organize work, where the boundaries between what machines do and what people do are more fluid than they've ever been.

What the Skeptic Is Actually Protecting

There's something worth taking seriously in the skeptical position that doesn't get enough credit: a lot of AI hype functions as permission to stop thinking carefully about quality. If you can generate infinite content, why obsess over whether any individual piece is good? If you can get a first draft instantly, why invest in people who write well?

That's a real risk. And it's not paranoia to name it.

But the response to that risk isn't to reject AI wholesale. It's to be specific about where human judgment is load-bearing and make sure it's actually present there. The workflows that work are the ones where someone made a clear-eyed decision about what the agent handles and what the human handles, rather than defaulting to "let the agent do it and hope."

The skeptic's instinct, stripped of the emotional charge, is basically: be specific about what this can actually do. That's a reasonable instinct. It's also, word for word, how Human Pages describes the jobs that get posted on the platform.

The Question Worth Sitting With

Maybe the more interesting question isn't whether AI is overhyped. It's whether we have good mental models for what it means to work alongside something that has no stake in the outcome.
