The power grid goes down. A hospital reroutes ambulances. A school district reassigns teachers. All three decisions made in under 400 milliseconds by an AI system owned by a private equity-backed SaaS company headquartered in Delaware. Nobody voted for this. Nobody can appeal it. The terms of service are 47 pages long.
This is not a hypothetical. It's the direction we're already moving, and the public conversation hasn't caught up.
A thread on r/artificial recently cut through a lot of the noise. The argument: AI discourse has become dangerously siloed. People talk about model behavior, jailbreaks, and whether GPT-4 is better than Claude for writing emails. Meanwhile, the structural question — who controls AI when it runs public infrastructure — gets almost no airtime. The Reddit post isn't radical. It's obvious. And the fact that it reads as radical says something about how distorted the conversation has become.
The Problem With Private Control of Public Systems
Here's what private control of AI infrastructure actually looks like in practice. A city contracts with a vendor to deploy an AI traffic management system. The vendor's model gets updated. Traffic patterns shift. Nobody at the city has access to the model weights, the training data, or the logic behind the decisions. They have a dashboard and a customer support email.
This is happening with hiring systems, benefits eligibility, predictive policing, school resource allocation. The AI isn't neutral. It's optimized for whatever objective the private company decided to optimize for, which is usually some proxy metric that correlates loosely with what the public actually needs.
The accountability gap is structural, not accidental. When a private actor controls the system, the incentives don't align with public welfare. They align with retention, margins, and the next funding round. You can't vote out a Series C startup. You can't FOIA a proprietary model.
Public control doesn't mean government bureaucracy owns every model. It means transparent systems, auditable decisions, and meaningful recourse when something goes wrong. It means the humans affected by AI decisions have some actual leverage.
What the Labor Market Looks Like When AI Hires
The labor angle here is where it gets specific fast. AI agents are already posting jobs, screening candidates, and making hiring recommendations at scale. Most people assume this is fine because a human somewhere approves the final decision. That assumption is doing a lot of work.
When an AI agent controls the top of the hiring funnel, it defines who gets seen. The filtering criteria, the ranking logic, the match score — these aren't neutral. They're built from historical data that carries historical bias, and they're tuned by whoever owns the system.

The human is a commodity input. The platform captures the surplus.
Public-interest AI in labor markets looks like open criteria, auditable matching, and payment that goes directly to workers. Not every system has to be a government program. It has to be legible and accountable.
Education and Governance Are Next
The Reddit thread calls out education and governance specifically, and it's right to. These are the two domains where the stakes of opaque AI systems are highest, and where the public has the least visibility right now.
AI tutoring systems are being deployed in K-12 schools across the US. Some are genuinely useful. Most are black boxes. The companies that build them own the data about how your kid learns, what they struggle with, where they disengage. That data is an asset on a balance sheet. It will be sold, acquired, or subpoenaed. Parents have no realistic way to audit what the system is doing or why.
Governance is worse. There are municipalities using AI to draft zoning regulations, prioritize infrastructure spending, and model budget scenarios. When an AI system tells a city council that Option B is 23% more cost-effective than Option A, what does the council actually do with that? Most of them don't have the technical capacity to interrogate the model. They defer. The AI recommendation becomes the policy.
This is where the siloed conversation becomes genuinely dangerous. If you only think about AI as a tool for personal productivity, you miss the fact that it's already making structural decisions at a societal level. The question of who controls those systems is a political question, not a technical one.
Decentralization Isn't a Buzzword Here
The answer isn't to slow down AI adoption in public systems. It's to demand different architecture. Decentralized, auditable, with human override baked in.
Decentralization means multiple parties can inspect and contest AI decisions, not just the vendor. Auditability means the logic is exposed, not locked in a proprietary API. Human override means there's a real escalation path, not a 72-hour support ticket queue.
These aren't moonshot requirements. They're engineering choices. The reason most AI infrastructure doesn't have them is that building for accountability costs money and reduces lock-in. Private actors optimizing for growth don't build accountability by default. It has to be required.
The public sector has the authority to require it. It mostly hasn't, because the people writing the contracts don't understand what to ask for, and the vendors aren't volunteering the information.
The Question Nobody Is Asking at the Policy Level
When a city deploys an AI system to allocate housing vouchers, who is legally responsible when the system discriminates? Right now, the answer is genuinely unclear. The city claims the vendor made the decision. The vendor says the city configured the system. The person who was denied housing has no practical recourse.
This ambiguity is not an oversight. It's useful to the parties who benefit from the current arrangement. Clear accountability would mean clear liability, which would mean vendors building more carefully and cities procuring more rigorously. Both are more expensive than the status quo.
The Reddit thread is right that the conversation needs to get structural. Personal AI use is not the same problem as AI in public infrastructure. Treating them as the same problem produces bad policy and bad platforms.
The more interesting question is whether the current moment is actually the last window where structural intervention is possible. Once the contracts are signed, the systems are deployed, and the incumbents are entrenched, the leverage shifts. It's much harder to audit a system that has been running your city's emergency dispatch for four years than to demand transparency before the contract is signed.
That window is open right now. Whether anyone walks through it is a different question.
