How to Enable the Microphone on a Microsoft Modern Webcam

Written by Hunter Ryskoski

Overview

If you are using a Microsoft Modern Webcam and notice that the microphone is not working in applications like Microsoft Teams, Zoom, or other conferencing platforms, the microphone may need to be enabled through the Microsoft Accessory Center application.

This guide walks through the process of enabling the built-in microphone on the Microsoft Modern Webcam.

Requirements

Before starting, make sure you have:

  • A Microsoft Modern Webcam connected to your computer
  • Internet access to download the Microsoft Accessory Center app
  • Administrative rights if your organization restricts Microsoft Store installs

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Download Microsoft Accessory Center

Download and install the Microsoft Accessory Center application from Microsoft.

You can get it from the Microsoft Store by searching:

Microsoft Accessory Center

Or visit:

https://apps.microsoft.com/

2. Connect the Microsoft Modern Webcam

Plug the webcam into your computer using USB.

Allow Windows a few moments to detect and install the device automatically.

3. Open Microsoft Accessory Center

Launch the Microsoft Accessory Center application.

Once opened:

  • Select Modern Webcam from the list of connected devices

4. Enable the Webcam Microphone

Inside the webcam settings:

  1. Select Webcam settings
  2. Locate the option labeled Webcam microphone
  3. Toggle the microphone setting On

Verifying the Microphone Works

After enabling the microphone:

  1. Open Microsoft Teams
  2. Go to:
    • Settings
    • Devices
  3. Under Microphone, select:
    • Microsoft Modern Webcam
  4. Test the microphone by making a test call

You can also verify functionality in:

  • Zoom
  • Discord
  • Windows Sound Settings
  • Web browser microphone tests

Additional Troubleshooting

If the microphone still does not work:

Check Windows Privacy Settings

Go to:

Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone

Make sure:

  • Microphone access is enabled
  • Apps are allowed to access the microphone

Disconnect and Reconnect the Webcam

Try:

  • Reconnecting the webcam
  • Using another USB port
  • Restarting the computer

Update Windows

Ensure the device is fully updated through:

Settings → Windows Update

Final Notes

Unlike some standard USB webcams, the Microsoft Modern Webcam uses the Microsoft Accessory Center application to manage certain device features, including microphone settings. If the microphone appears missing in conferencing applications, enabling it through the accessory software usually resolves the issue quickly.
