you can post to tiktok from desktop in two ways: upload the file on tiktok.com yourself, or press post to tiktok on a finished underway episode and let it go straight to your profile. as of 13 october 2026 the second way posts in public, to whoever you choose.
the first way is free and works for any video you already have. the second is for people making a series: the video, its caption and tiktok's own questions are already on the episode page, so posting is one press rather than a download, an upload and a caption written from nothing. this page covers both, step by step, and what to check before either.
how to post to tiktok from desktop with tiktok itself
tiktok.com lets you upload from a computer, in any modern browser. the upload page lives in tiktok studio, the creator side of the site.
- go to tiktok.com and sign in with the same account you use on your phone.
- press upload, the plus in the bar, which opens tiktok studio.
- drag the video in, or press select video and pick it from your computer.
- write the caption, add hashtags and mention anyone who should be tagged.
- pick the cover from a frame of the video.
- choose who can see it, and whether comments, duets and stitches are allowed.
- post it, or schedule it if the option is offered to your account.
it works, and for a one-off video it is fine. tiktok's own help pages list the current file size and length limits, which change from time to time, so check them there rather than trusting a number from an old blog post. mp4 and mov are the safe formats.
the cost is everything around the upload. you export the file from wherever it was made, find it again, write a caption from nothing, then do the same for youtube, instagram and linkedin. for a daily series that is the part people stop doing first.
what to check before you post to tiktok from desktop
- the shape. tiktok is a vertical feed. a portrait video fills the screen; a landscape one plays with bands above and below.
- captions burned in. tiktok often plays with the sound off, so the words need to be in the picture, not only in a caption file.
- the first second. the opening frame and line decide whether anyone stops. a title card or a greeting first loses them.
- the caption. a short line saying what the video is, then a few hashtags on the last line. links in a tiktok caption are not clickable, so leave them out.
- who can see it. tiktok asks every time, and the default is not always what you meant.

a real clip from underway's own series: vertical, branded, the screen shown below the face because the words point at it.
how to post to tiktok from desktop with underway
underway is a video diary app for founders. it interviews you on camera about your work, whenever suits you, and cuts the answers into a numbered episode. by the time an episode is finished, the file and the words around it already exist, so posting is the last small step instead of a project.
- connect tiktok once, on account, under where episodes go. tiktok shows its own sign-in page and asks you to allow posting.
- open a finished episode and go to share.
- read the caption. one caption is written for tiktok and instagram from what you said, with the hashtags on its last line. change any of it; it saves as you type.
- press post to tiktok. tiktok's own questions come next.
- answer them and post. the file goes from underway to tiktok and lands on your profile.
tiktok's questions are laid out the way tiktok asks them: who can see it, with nothing chosen for you; comments, duet and stitch, all off until you turn them on; and disclose post content, off unless you turn it on, then your brand for your own business or branded content for someone else's, with the label tiktok will put on the post. branded content cannot be posted as only me. that is tiktok's rule, and the sheet follows it.
once it is up, the button becomes view on tiktok. remove from tiktok is there too, but tiktok lets no app delete a video, so it says so, asks you to confirm, and only forgets the link in underway. delete the video in tiktok if you want it gone.

a real episode on the iphone app, ready to post. the same episode posts from the website or the phone.
desktop or phone: the same button
the reason most people look for a way to post to tiktok from a computer is that the video was made on the computer. exporting it, sending it to the phone and uploading it there adds three steps and a compressed copy. with underway the episode does not live on either device; it lives in your account, so post to tiktok on the website and post to tiktok on the iphone app send the same file with the same caption, and tiktok asks the same questions on both. use whichever is in front of you when the episode is finished.
post everywhere, not just tiktok
post everywhere, on the publish card, sends the episode to every connected channel in turn, each with the words written for it, and shows a line per channel: posted, already posted, left out, or failed and why. which channels count is yours: on account, the post everywhere card has a tick for each one. tiktok still asks its questions every time, and x still shows its thread before it sends, both opening under the row once you press.
the video itself is never re-cut for tiktok. a portrait episode is already the shape tiktok wants. a landscape episode goes as the file you filmed. a podcast is drawn portrait as well, so tiktok and instagram get a vertical version rather than a crop. tiktok, instagram, linkedin and x get a copy with the captions burned in, because those feeds play with the sound off.
shorts go too
find clips, on a finished episode's shorts tab, cuts short vertical clips from the episode, each opening on a line most likely to stop a scroll and ending on a card that says where the full episode is. each clip has its own words for each network, tiktok included, written in your first person from what you said in that clip, with no links. post this clip to tiktok opens tiktok's own questions first, every time, the same as an episode's.
tiktok then processes the clip on its side, the button says so, and it becomes view on tiktok once it is live. because nobody can tap a link in a tiktok post, the clip's last card names your page, and once your series is public, put your page in your bio sits under the clips with the address to copy.
tiktok.com upload or underway: which to use
| tiktok.com upload | underway | |
|---|---|---|
| what you start with | a finished video file | an interview, cut for you |
| the caption | written from nothing | written from what you said, yours to change |
| captions in the picture | add them in an editor | burned in for tiktok |
| tiktok's own questions | asked by tiktok | asked the same way, every time |
| other networks | upload again on each | post everywhere, with words for each |
| cost | free | posting is part of the series plan |
if you have one video and it is already finished, upload it on tiktok.com. if you are building a habit of posting, the file is not the hard part; the caption, the clips and doing it again tomorrow are, and that is the work underway takes off you.
what it never does
nothing goes to tiktok unless you press it. there is no setting that posts every episode to tiktok on its own, and who can see a post is asked every time, because tiktok asks every time and a setting answered once is how the wrong thing goes out. underway gets the right to post and your display name; it does not read your feed.
the founder plan still writes the tiktok caption for every episode, for you to copy and post yourself. posting from the episode page, to tiktok and the rest, is part of the series plan.
if the post starts life as a longer video, cutting it into shorts: long video into shorts.
faqs
can you post to tiktok from desktop?
yes. tiktok.com lets you upload from a computer through tiktok studio, and underway posts a finished episode or clip from its website with one press, straight to your profile.

yes, in the browser. tiktok.com's upload page runs in a modern browser on a mac as on a pc, and underway's website posts from the browser too.
which underway plan posts to tiktok?
posting from the episode is part of the series plan. on the founder plan the tiktok caption is still written for every episode, to copy and post yourself.
does underway post to tiktok without asking?
no. every post is a press of post to tiktok, post this clip to tiktok or post everywhere, and tiktok's questions about who can see it are answered each time.
can i delete a tiktok from underway?
no. tiktok lets no app delete a video. remove from tiktok forgets the link in underway; delete the video in tiktok itself.
the first second of a short decides the rest: how to make a good hook for youtube shorts.
the link nobody can tap in a caption: how to put a clickable link in your instagram bio.
