The 4-line prompt structure that fixed my AI output (after months of garbage)

For months my AI outputs were mediocre and I blamed the model. Then I realized the problem was my prompts — they were vague, and vague prompts get vague results.

Here's the 4-part structure I now use for almost everything. It's not magic, it's just discipline.

The structure

Every serious prompt I write has these four blocks:

ROLE: who the model should be
CONTEXT: what it needs to know
TASK: the exact deliverable
FORMAT: how the output must be shaped
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

That's it. Four lines. The difference is that each line removes a specific kind of ambiguity.

Why each part matters

ROLE sets vocabulary and judgment. "You are a senior editor" produces different word choices than "You are a marketer." It costs one line and changes the whole tone.

CONTEXT is where most people under-invest. The model can't know your constraints, your audience, or your goal unless you state them. Two sentences of context beat a paragraph of instructions.

TASK must be a verb with an object. "Improve this" is not a task. "Rewrite this so a 12-year-old can follow it, keeping all numbers" is.

FORMAT is the one people forget, and it's the one that saves the most time. "Output a markdown table with columns X, Y, Z" means you can copy the result straight into your work. No reformatting, no cleanup.

Before and after

Weak prompt:

Write something about productivity for my newsletter.

Strong prompt:

ROLE: You are a productivity writer for busy founders.
CONTEXT: My readers are solo founders who waste hours on manual reporting.
TASK: Write a 150-word intro that names the specific pain and promises a fix.
FORMAT: 3 short paragraphs, no bullet points, conversational tone.
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Same model. Completely different result.

The habit that makes it stick

I keep a text file called prompt-template.txt with those four labels, and I paste it every time. Filling in four blanks takes thirty seconds and has saved me more time than any tool I've bought.

If you want the templates I've collected (reporting, writing, analysis — all pre-structured), I keep a small library here:

What's the prompt you keep re-writing from scratch? I'd love to see it.
