Banking is entering a new phase. For years, AI meant chatbots and dashboards — tools that assisted humans but never acted on their own. That's changing fast. A new wave of software, often called Agentic Money, can move, reconcile, and optimize funds with minimal human input.
The numbers explain the urgency. Newgen projects the agentic AI market growing from $2.1 billion to $81 billion by 2034. CSI's 2026 survey found 85% of community banking leaders see AI as a major competitive edge, and Gartner reports 57% of finance teams are already piloting agentic systems — with 15% of daily business decisions expected to be AI-driven by 2028.
What makes it "agentic"? Unlike automation, which follows fixed rules, an agentic AI solution works toward a goal. It reads live financial data, coordinates across systems, and makes decisions within set policy limits — things like rebalancing liquidity, routing payments optimally, reassessing credit risk continuously, or flagging compliance issues before they escalate.
McKinsey notes operations eat up 60–70% of a bank's costs, making this the biggest opportunity for an agentic AI solution. PYMNTS reports banks are already testing agents inside compliance, treasury, and payment systems — a real shift from AI that advises to AI that acts.
The catch: most core banking platforms weren't built for this. They lack the real-time APIs, contextual memory, and governance layers agentic systems need. Deloitte argues banks must redesign workflows, not just bolt AI onto legacy systems.
Risks are real too. Gartner expects over 40% of agentic AI projects to be abandoned by 2027 due to unclear ROI or governance gaps, and "agent washing" — rebranding basic automation as agentic AI — is already common. The near-term reality is bounded autonomy: agents handle routine decisions while humans stay in control of high-stakes ones.
The last twenty years digitized money. The next decade will make it autonomous — and the banks that build a well-governed agentic AI solution early will set the pace for everyone else.
