Many companies would happily fire all their employees. And many have fired many employees believing, falsely, that current AI technologies could replace them. But many have had to rehire because they put too much confidence in AI (e.g., Duolingo). It’s so common there’s a slang term for it: “AI buyer’s remorse.”
LLMs are autocomplete plagiarism machines. They’re good at spotting trends in data. As such, they’re useful for automating some tasks and for generating some insights. This can create efficiencies. But humans are still necessary. General AI is still, at this point, vaporware. It’s a promise that AI companies are selling. But they haven’t been able to deliver on it.
If Gen AI ever comes along, many jobs will go away. Good governments will create jobs or create universal basic income. Bad governments will allow people to starve. Unemployment will skyrocket, along with all the downsides that accompany it.
