Saw this Show HN yesterday: ScreenMind, a vision model that runs on every screenshot 100% locally so you can chat with your screen history. It was actually a cool demo and the engineering behind it looked solid.
I ran it through a real validation and here's what i found.
The demand for something like this is genuinely real. Rewind.ai was pulling 90-comment HN threads for years and Microsoft Recall's privacy backlash in 2024-25 is probably the loudest "people want this but not in the cloud" signal we've seen in a while. So I get why someone would want to build it.
The problem is the business side just doesn't hold up. Screenpipe which is YC S26 backed already leads this space with 19,566 GitHub stars and they're actively shipping. OpenRecall has 2,874 stars and it's completely free. Microsoft ships Recall itself free inside Windows and OpenAI is reportedly building something similar. The competition isn't just fierce, it's mostly free.
What makes it worse is the users who care the most about privacy are exactly the users who won't pay when free alternatives exist at that kind of scale. I ran it against the CODE framework and it passes on Open and partially on Definite but it completely falls apart on Expensive and that's the one that actually determines whether there's a business here. When there's no expensive problem there's no business, no matter how good the demo looks.
The one thing that is actually worth building here isn't the recall feature itself. It's the MCP server that gives AI agents eyes on what's on your screen. That's a completely different customer, a developer building agentic workflows who actually has budget and willingness to pay. Selling agent infrastructure to that person is a real business. Selling a privacy vitamin to people who already have free options everywhere just isn't.
Every number in here traces to a real URL and nothing is AI-generated market
size estimates.
Doing free validations like this for a few founders this week so if you have an idea you're thinking about building drop it in the comments or DM me and I'll run it through the same thing.
