Recently, I've been exploring an open-source project called OpenNVR, and I found the idea behind it genuinely interesting.
We usually think of a security camera in a very simple way:
Camera → Video → Recording → Search when something happens
But a camera is actually observing its environment continuously.
A person enters a room.
A vehicle arrives.
Someone crosses a restricted area.
An object is moved.
Something unusual happens.
The interesting question is:
What if we could actually build applications around everything the camera is seeing?
That's what caught my attention while exploring OpenNVR.
It's not just about displaying multiple camera streams or storing recordings. What I found interesting is the developer side of it — cameras, events, AI models, and applications can become parts of a larger system that developers can build on.
One thing I particularly liked is the idea of an AI adapter architecture.
Instead of making the whole system dependent on one particular AI model, different models can be connected through adapters.
That opens up some interesting possibilities.
You could experiment with object detection, tracking, license plates, face recognition, scene understanding, or even your own models.
And then there is the App SDK.
This got me thinking:
What if, instead of building another application that simply watches a camera feed, we built something that actually does something with what the camera sees?
For example:
Detect something → Understand the event → Trigger an action
Or perhaps:
Ask the camera what happened in a particular area.
Or build an entirely different workflow that nobody has thought about yet.
What I also appreciate is that OpenNVR is open source and self-hosted. The possibility of keeping the video, processing, and AI within infrastructure you control makes this particularly interesting for experimenting with computer vision and edge AI.
I'm still exploring the project, so I'm not presenting this as a technical deep dive or a product review.
It's simply one of those open-source projects that made me stop and think:
We've been treating cameras as video sources for a long time.
Maybe they can become something much more interesting — programmable sensors for the physical world.
And as a developer, that's the part that excites me.
I'm curious to see what people in the community would build around this idea.
