I built a free Interactive MCP Config & .cursorrules Generator for Claude Desktop and Cursor (Open Source)

Managing configurations across different AI coding environments like Claude Desktop, Cursor, and Windsurf often leads to tedious boilerplate, syntax discrepancies, and fragile manual setups.

To solve this friction, I built and open-sourced Genesis, a web-based interactive builder that generates production-grade Model Context Protocol (MCP) configs and contextual .cursorrules in real time.

The Problem: Fragmented Protocol Configs & Agent Slop

When setting up AI assistants for production engineering work, developers typically encounter three recurring issues:

  1. Client Discrepancies: Claude Desktop expects ~/.config/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json, while Cursor expects .cursor/mcp.json in the workspace root. Both require specific JSON schemas and argument structures.
  2. Environment Contamination: Running local Python or Node servers often involves installing dependencies globally or wrestling with virtual environments. Modern MCP clients support uvx, enabling ephemeral, isolated execution directly from GitHub without prior installation.
  3. Weak Context / Prompt Drift: LLMs tend to default to outdated libraries, hallucinate deprecated methods, or generate dangerous code (e.g., executing unbounded database queries or blocking event loops). Without strict .cursorrules and CLAUDE.md guidelines, agents degrade code quality.

The Solution: Instant Interactive Config Assembly

The Genesis Config Builder provides a live interface where you can toggle core capabilities and select your language/framework stack.

It instantly outputs synchronized configurations for:

  • claude_desktop_config.json
  • .cursor/mcp.json
  • .cursorrules
  • CLAUDE.md

Example 1: Claude Desktop with Zero-Install uvx

Here is what the builder generates for a database security and anti-bot scraping workflow:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "pgsafe-mcp": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": ["--from", "git+https://github.com/johannschiffer/pgsafe-mcp", "pgsafe-mcp"]
    },
    "crawlengine-mcp": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": ["--from", "git+https://github.com/johannschiffer/crawlengine-mcp", "crawlengine-mcp"]
    }
  }
}

Because it uses uvx, you do not need to clone the repository or install Python dependencies manually. The client handles execution isolation automatically.

Example 2: Python / FastAPI & Pydantic v2 .cursorrules

When configuring an assistant for backend development, the generator produces strict working rules that eliminate generic suggestions:

# Python / FastAPI Ruleset for Cursor

Stack: Python 3.11+, FastAPI, Pydantic v2, SQLAlchemy 2.0 async, uvicorn, pytest

## Conventions
- Type-annotate every function; run mypy --strict on app/ in CI
- One APIRouter per domain module; keep route handlers under 25 lines and push logic into service functions
- Request and response bodies are Pydantic models; never return ORM objects directly
- Inject DB sessions, settings and auth via Depends; no module-level global clients
- Raise HTTPException only in the API layer; services raise domain exceptions mapped by exception handlers

## Testing
- pytest with httpx.AsyncClient against the ASGI app, no live server
- Override dependencies in tests instead of monkeypatching
- Every endpoint gets a success test, a validation-failure test and an auth-failure test

## Security
- Validate all input with Pydantic constraints (max_length, ge, le, regex)
- Hash passwords with argon2 or bcrypt; compare tokens with hmac.compare_digest
- Set explicit CORS origins; never allow_origins=['*'] with credentials

## Avoid
- Blocking calls (requests, time.sleep, sync DB drivers) inside async def
- Catch-all except Exception that swallows errors
- Business logic in route functions

The Six Open Source Core MCP Servers

As part of the Genesis ecosystem, six production-focused servers have been released with official tagged releases (v1.0.0):

  1. pgsafe-mcp: Zero-trust PostgreSQL / SQLite inspection guard. Enforces read-only query safety, real-time PII redaction, and runaway EXPLAIN plan cost protection.
  2. crawlengine-mcp: Anti-bot perimeter evasion scraper with clean, token-efficient HTML-to-Markdown extraction.
  3. browserbridge-mcp: Deterministic headless browser automation using Playwright session pools and accessibility tree (AOM) extraction.
  4. omnibridge-mcp: Multi-channel alerting and webhook bus across Discord, Telegram, Slack, and Matrix with SQLite WAL persistence.
  5. sysflow-mcp: Sandboxed Linux administration for systemd services, journald log streaming, and process monitoring.
  6. fastmcp-forge: Production FastMCP scaffolder with stdio/SSE dual transports, bearer authentication, and Docker generation.
