OpenAI's $30 Billion Sprint Before Anthropic's IPO: Strategy, Insurance, or Both?
OpenAI is reportedly racing to raise $30 billion before Anthropic's expected mid-November IPO — a round that could value OpenAI above $1.4 trillion. The timing is confirmed; the motive is not. And that ambiguity is the whole story.
- The numbers are enormous but unsettled. Preliminary talks in September centered on ~$1.2T; the target has since climbed past $1.4T — more than 64% above the $852B post-money valuation from the record $122B round in March. Neither the amount nor the valuation is finalized.
- The "race" framing comes from reporting, not from OpenAI. The "before Anthropic's IPO" angle is Reuters reporting (2026-10-20, citing people familiar). OpenAI has never stated the timing as a rationale — the story is really two stories: the fundraising itself, and a motive the reporting does not establish.
- Reading one: strategy. Both labs were courting the same deep institutional pockets — SoftBank, Abu Dhabi's MGX, long-only funds, sovereign wealth funds — in the same week. Raising first could let OpenAI set its own valuation before a market-tested Anthropic comp hands investors leverage. (An expert's "could want," not OpenAI's stated reason.)
- Reading two: insurance. OpenAI's infrastructure commitments are a fixed capital schedule — data centre build-out doesn't pause for IPO calendars. With CoreWeave under pressure over ~$50B in borrowings, listings being pulled, and the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index shedding $1.6T in under two weeks, raising into a wobbling market may just be prudent.
- The numbers are noisy enough to resist comparison. OpenAI pitches $50B annualized revenue, expecting $70B by year-end; Anthropic reported Q3 revenue of $16.8B with annualized revenue near $65B by July — but the two companies don't even agree on how to count revenue.
