What's one SEO change on an ecommerce site that actually made a measurable difference?

There's a lot of SEO advice out there, but it's hard to tell what actually moves the needle on an online store. Category page copy, internal linking, product schema, site speed, buying guides, and so on.

For those who've worked on ecommerce sites, what's one change you made that showed up in your rankings or traffic, and how long did it take to see it? Also curious about things that sounded great but did nothing.

For us, improving internal linking has made one of the clearest differences. We’ve seen stores with strong product and category pages that were simply too buried in the site structure. Adding relevant links from blogs, category pages, and other high-authority pages helped search engines find and understand those pages better.

The impact usually isn’t immediate, but we’ve seen movement within a few weeks and more noticeable improvements over the following months. On the other hand, adding large amounts of category copy just for SEO rarely does much if it isn’t actually useful to shoppers.

Makes sense. How did you decide which pages to prioritize for internal linking? And roughly how long did it take before you noticed the movement?
