A Pre-Flight Checklist Before You Burn STT Credits on a Long Video

Disclosure: I build ClipShrink, including the cloud Video to Text tool. For device-picked files, compress/trim can run as browser-local encoding; transcription is Freemium cloud work with an account and credits. This note is about the transcription path.

Long recordings are where speech-to-text bills hurt. A two-hour dump with ten useful minutes still meters like two hours. Use this checklist before you approve a paid (or scarce free-credit) job.

1. Cut to the speech you need

Prefer a chapter or clip over the full capture. If you only need the decision segment, trim first. On ClipShrink, device-picked trim/compress can stay in the browser for those files; then send the smaller cut to cloud transcription.

2. Listen for ASR killers

Heavy music beds, crosstalk, and bathroom echo waste credits more than resolution helps. If you cannot hear the words, the model usually cannot either.

3. Prefer original audio over a crushed share file

Crushing bitrate for chat is fine after you have a transcript. Crushing it before ASR is not.

4. Read the duration-based quote

Freemium tools that show credits up front beat surprise invoices. On ClipShrink Video to Text, preview the source, check the quote, then approve cloud processing.

5. Treat the first pass as a draft

Names, jargon, and overlapping speakers still need a human pass for anything public. Budget edit time, not just inference time.

Soft close

If you want that quote-first cloud path: ClipShrink Video to Text Converter.
