How I Built a System to Apply to 50 Jobs a Week Without Losing My Mind

2. The 50-Application Rule

Quality compounds. I decided to spend the same amount of time on 5 focused applications as most people spend on 50 spray-and-pray applications.

For each application:

  • Research the company (30 min)
  • Customize resume (20 min)
  • Write a personalized cover letter (15 min)
  • Submit and track (5 min)

Total: ~70 min per application vs. the usual 5-10 minutes.

This sounds slower, but my response rate went from 3% to 25%.

3. Interview Preparation

When I got an interview, I'd prepare for 3 hours using a structured checklist:

  • Company research (30 min)
  • STAR stories prep (60 min)
  • Common questions practice (45 min)
  • Questions to ask them (15 min)
  • Outfit and logistics (15 min)
  • Follow-up email draft (15 min)

4. The Follow-Up System

Most job seekers send one follow-up email and give up. I sent 5:

  1. 3 days after applying (to confirm receipt)
  2. 1 week after applying (to express continued interest)
  3. 1 day after interview (to say thank you)
  4. 1 week after interview (to check status)
  5. 2 weeks after second interview (final check)

Each follow-up was personalized, brief, and professional.

The Results

After 8 weeks:

  • Applications per week: 5-8 (down from 30+)
  • Response rate: 25% (up from 3%)
  • Interviews per week: 3-4 (up from 0.2)
  • Job offer: 2 offers in 2 months

I spent less time job hunting and got better results.

Your Turn

You don't need to use my exact system. But you need a system. Here's what I recommend:

  1. Get a tracking spreadsheet
  2. Limit your applications to 5-10/week
  3. Prepare thoroughly for each interview
  4. Follow up at least 3 times

The scattergun approach doesn't work. Try the sniper approach instead.
