The Key Principles
1. Always negotiate, never apologize
Wrong: "I know you're probably busy, and I feel bad asking, but..."
Right: "I want to discuss the compensation package."
2. Get everything in writing before responding
Verbal offers mean nothing. Wait for the official letter. "Let me review the official offer and get back to you tomorrow" is a complete sentence.
3. The first offer is never the best
Companies build in 5-15% negotiation room. Always counter.
4. Focus on total comp, not just base
Signing bonus, equity, PTO, remote days, professional development budget — all are negotiable. If base is truly fixed, ask about these.
5. Have a BATNA
Best Alternative To Negotiated Agreement. If you have another offer, or you're fine walking away, you have leverage. Never bluff this.
What to Say When They Counteroffer
If they come back with more money:
"I appreciate this. This is much closer to what I had in mind. Can I have 24 hours to review the full package?"
If they come back with the same:
"I understand budget constraints. Is there anything else we can work on? More PTO? A faster review timeline?"
