Three connection modes give you six useful starting test states: each mode with voice capture inactive, then active.
That is how I would evaluate a multi-mode gaming headset before making it the default for a co-op night. A music track proves playback. It does not prove the full game-plus-chat path.
Genius lists Bluetooth, a 2.4GHz USB receiver and 3.5mm audio for its HS-GX830BT. Its product page also distinguishes the included 3.5mm audio cable from the USB-A-to-USB-C charging cable. Those are concrete, manufacturer-listed connections—not a benchmark or proof that every feature works on every platform.
Start with a six-row matrix
For one supported host, record these cases:
- Bluetooth: playback only; then playback with the intended microphone actively capturing.
- 2.4GHz receiver: playback only; then playback with the intended microphone actively capturing.
- 3.5mm: playback only; then playback with the intended microphone actively capturing, if the host, jack and cable support that path.
Use “unsupported” when a route is not documented for the host. Use “not tested” when it is possible but you have not tried it. Neither means “failed.”
For each row, write down the selected output device, selected input device, whether left/right cues remain distinguishable, whether a teammate can hear you, and what happens after leaving voice chat. Add the exact OS build, driver version, game and chat application. A useful result belongs to a configuration, not just a model name.
Do not fill the matrix with expected passes. The empty cells are the point: they make assumptions visible before a purchase recommendation or a support claim escapes into the world.
Why the microphone changes the test
Microsoft's Windows 11 guidance explains that stereo playback while a Bluetooth microphone is in use depends on compatible LE Audio hardware and drivers, with requirements for both the PC and the audio device. A generic Bluetooth label is not enough to establish that feature.
That is a platform-level qualification, not evidence that this Genius headset supports LE Audio. The manufacturer page retrieved for this article lists Bluetooth but does not establish that capability. Do not silently promote one into the other.
The practical lesson is more useful than a blanket “Bluetooth is bad for games” verdict: test the exact path you plan to use. Playback without voice capture and playback during a conversation are different states.
Make the test repeatable
Pick a familiar game scene with identifiable left/right sounds, or a known stereo test clip for the channel check. Keep volume comfortable and consistent. Record the app's chosen input and output before starting; defaults can differ between the game, operating system and chat app.
First listen without voice capture. Then join a private test call with a willing teammate and confirm that the intended microphone is actually active. A mute toggle alone may not release the microphone, so note the application's capture state rather than assuming mute means playback-only mode.
Ask the teammate to confirm intelligibility, check your directional cues again, then leave the call. Finally disconnect and reconnect the headset and repeat the short check. If a route changes, write down what changed instead of summarizing it as “sounds worse.”
For the analogue route, check the host's documentation for microphone support and any adapter requirements. A charging cable should not be treated as a USB audio connection unless the product documentation explicitly says it carries audio.
Keep the verdict smaller than the evidence
A clean result might read: “On this PC, receiver playback and microphone capture worked together in this game and chat app; reconnect restored the selected route.”
It should not read: “Zero latency on every console.” This checklist does not measure latency, battery endurance or long-term comfort. Those need separate methods. It also does not certify accessibility or hearing-health benefits.
For game teams, the same matrix can improve bug reports: capture the input/output route and voice state before changing audio code. For players, it turns a connectivity badge into a setup you understand.
Which transition would you add first: joining chat, reconnecting the receiver, or switching to another device?
