A Personal Note: Why Remote Work Changed My Life

Three years ago, I made a decision that terrified me: I sold most of my belongings, packed a backpack, and became a digital nomad. I wanted freedom, adventure, and to break free from the 9-to-5 office grind.

What I discovered was transformative.

The first year was pure magic. I coded from rooftops in Medellin, debugging sessions with ocean views in Portugal, standup calls from co-working spaces in Bangkok where I'd made friends from six different countries. Every day felt like an adventure. My productivity actually increased because I was finally in control of my environment.

But here's what surprised me most: the lifestyle taught me what I actually wanted from life.

After about two and a half years, I started craving something different. Not because the nomad life was bad, it was incredible, but because I'd grown. I wanted a community. A place where the barista knows my order. A gym where people recognize me. Deeper friendships that develop over years, not weeks.

So I chose a city that had captured my heart during my travels, one I never would have discovered without this journey, and I planted roots there.

Here's the beautiful truth nobody tells you:

The people who do the nomad thing for a few years and then choose to stop? They almost always end up in extraordinary places. Not just geographically, but in life. They've tested themselves. They know what they want. They've built global networks and gained perspectives that transform their careers.

I've watched fellow nomads settle in Lisbon, Taipei, Buenos Aires, and small towns in Spain I'd never heard of. Every single one of them found their place by first having the courage to explore.

The average? About 2-5 years for people with no constraints. That's enough time to:

  • Build a location-independent career
  • Save money (many places are cheaper than home)
  • Discover what environment makes you thrive
  • Build a global network of friends and colleagues
  • Figure out where you actually want to be long-term

I still work remotely. I still travel, just with a home base now. And the skills I built, the discipline of async communication, the ability to be productive anywhere, the cultural intelligence, those are permanent upgrades to who I am as a developer and as a person.

My advice? If you're curious about remote work or the digital nomad lifestyle, do it. Even if it's just for a year. You'll either discover it's exactly what you needed, or you'll learn invaluable lessons about what you actually want from life.

The jobs are there. The tools are better than ever. The community is welcoming.

The only question is: are you ready to take the leap?

Quick Tips for Landing Your First Remote Job

  1. Optimize your LinkedIn - Add "Open to Remote" and update your headline
  2. Build in public - GitHub activity and blog posts matter
  3. Master async communication - Written communication is everything
  4. Time zone flexibility - Being flexible with US/EU overlap hours opens more doors
  5. Start with contract work - Platforms like Toptal and Turing can be stepping stones

Good luck out there. The world is waiting for you.
