Scope creep is the silent killer of freelance profitability.
The project starts clearly. Then: "can you just add...", "while you are in there...", "one more thing...". By the end you have done twice the work for the original price.
Here is how to stop it without ruining the client relationship.
Why it happens
Usually not malice. Clients genuinely do not realise that small requests have cost implications. They are used to employed colleagues saying yes to things. You are running a business.
The fix is structural, not confrontational.
The change request clause
Every contract should include one. The language:
"Any work outside the agreed scope will be quoted separately before proceeding. Verbal approvals are not binding — changes must be confirmed in writing."
That sentence alone ends most scope creep. Clients self-police when they know the rules.
The response when it happens anyway
Do not say yes. Do not say no. Say:
"Happy to include that. It falls outside the current scope so I will send a quick quote before we proceed — should be straightforward."
Warm. Professional. Creates a decision point. Most clients either approve the extra fee or quietly drop the request.
The three-strikes rule
First extra request: gentle redirect (above).
Second: send a formal change request form with fee.
Third: you have a scope problem that needs a conversation.
If you reach three, the project scope needs to be renegotiated or you need to decline future work from this client.
