Comcast Files a 119-Worker New Jersey Layoff Notice Effective January 27, 2027

A recently imported WARN record lists 119 Comcast workers in New Jersey affected by a layoff effective Wednesday, January 27, 2027. It is the largest newly surfaced New Jersey filing in the latest Layoff Atlas import, and one of only a handful of New Jersey records already carrying a 2027 effective date.

The record does not list a specific locality — Layoff Atlas shows it as "locality unavailable" for New Jersey — and it does not publish a notice date. That combination is common for recently imported records: the effective date and worker count arrive first, and the notice date is filled in when the underlying source record is matched. What is confirmed is the size (119 workers), the state (New Jersey), and the effective date (January 27, 2027).

These are reported plans, not confirmed job losses. WARN filings describe what an employer has told a state agency it plans to do; final headcounts can change before the effective date, and some planned layoffs are reduced, delayed, or withdrawn.

What the filing adds to New Jersey's 2027 picture

New Jersey's imported archive holds 2,344 non-cancelled WARN notices reporting 376,139 workers affected. Of those, 26 notices carry future effective dates, and 8 notices already fall in 2027, reporting 697 workers in total. The Comcast record is part of that small 2027 group, and at 119 workers it accounts for roughly one-sixth of the state's currently reported 2027 total.

For comparison, New Jersey recorded 141 notices covering 17,920 workers in 2026 so far, and 90 notices covering 13,105 workers in 2025. The 2027 figures will grow as more notices are filed and imported; early-year totals always look small because most employers have not yet filed notices for dates that far out.

New Jersey's layoff-notice rules are stricter than the federal floor

New Jersey is one of the states with its own "mini-WARN" law, and it is among the strictest in the country. Where the federal WARN Act generally requires 60 days' advance notice for covered mass layoffs and plant closings, New Jersey's law requires 90 days' notice for covered employers. It also requires severance pay for affected workers when a covered mass layoff, termination of operations, or transfer of operations triggers the law — a requirement the federal WARN Act does not impose on its own.

That matters for how to read this filing. A January 27, 2027 effective date sits well beyond the federal 60-day window and beyond New Jersey's 90-day window from late October, so the timing is consistent with a notice filed well in advance. But because this record's notice date is not published, the notice period itself cannot be verified from the record alone — workers and reporters should check the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development's WARN list for the underlying filing before drawing conclusions about compliance.

The national backdrop

Nationally, Layoff Atlas currently tracks 686 notices covering 66,703 reported workers in its 90-day notice window, with 29 counts unavailable. California (17,715 workers) and Washington (17,361) lead the state ranking by a wide margin, followed by Illinois (4,385), Texas (3,280), and Georgia (2,492).

The upcoming effective weeks show a mid-November peak: the week of November 14 carries 8,453 reported workers, the heaviest of the next six weeks, followed by November 21 (6,925) and November 28 (5,937). The week of December 5 is currently the lightest at 846 workers. The Comcast filing's January 27, 2027 effective date falls outside that six-week window — a reminder that the layoff calendar extends well past the near-term peak, and that early 2027 filings are already accumulating.

What affected workers should check

Workers covered by a WARN notice in New Jersey should confirm a few things promptly: whether they are individually covered by the notice, the exact effective date for their location, and what severance — if any — the employer's notice promises. New Jersey's severance requirement applies to covered employers under the state's mini-WARN law, but eligibility depends on the employer's size and the nature of the action, so the filing itself and any employer communications are the authoritative sources.

Unemployment benefits are a separate process from WARN notice: filing a claim with the state is how workers access benefits, and the notice itself does not start a claim. Workers who believe they did not receive the notice the law requires can contact the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development or an employment attorney; this article is not legal advice.

How to read this record

Three cautions apply to this filing in particular. First, the locality is not listed, so do not attribute these 119 jobs to a specific New Jersey city or site. Second, the notice date is unavailable in the imported record, so the notice period cannot be computed from this data alone. Third, the worker count is the figure in the imported record; it may be revised as the source record is updated.

Layoff Atlas will update the record if a notice date or locality is added. For now, the filing stands as an early, concrete data point for New Jersey's 2027 layoff calendar: 119 workers, effective January 27, 2027.
