Virginia WARN Notices 2026: 61 Filings, 7,735 Workers, and What Comes Next

How many layoffs has Virginia seen in 2026? The WARN notices in the Layoff Atlas archive give a concrete answer: 61 notices filed so far this year, reporting 7,735 affected workers. The newest official notice arrived October 7, 2026, and 13 notices carry future effective dates — meaning part of this year's reported total is still scheduled to take effect.

Virginia's 2026 in one picture

The 61 notices span closures and layoffs across the state. To put the year-to-date figure in perspective:

  • 2026 (so far): 61 notices · 7,735 workers
  • 2025 (full year): 112 notices · 12,067 workers
  • 2024 (full year): 63 notices · 8,706 workers
  • 2023 (full year): 112 notices · 9,742 workers
  • 2022 (full year): 60 notices · 5,220 workers
  • 2021 (full year): 74 notices · 7,852 workers
  • 2020 (full year): 453 notices · 58,089 workers

Two things stand out. First, 2026 has nearly matched 2024's full-year worker total with more than two months left in the year — and it's already well past 2022's 5,220. Second, the pace remains well below the two heaviest recent years, 2023 and 2025, when filings topped 9,700 and 12,000 workers respectively. For context, no year comes close to 2020, when the pandemic produced 453 Virginia notices reporting 58,089 workers — roughly seven and a half times this year's total so far.

The biggest 2026 filings

A handful of large filings account for most of Virginia's 2026 worker total. The eight largest, by reported workers:

  • Ideal US Talent Worker OpCo — 776 workers, statewide, VA; notice May 1, 2026, effective July 1, 2026
  • Amazon — 691 workers, Fairfax, Franconia, Lorton, Alexandria & Falls Church; notice January 28, 2026, effective April 27, 2026
  • Crothall Healthcare — 545 workers, Richmond; notice August 28, 2026, effective October 31, 2026
  • Yokohama Tire Manufacturing Virginia — 533 workers, Salem; notice January 16, 2026, effective March 18, 2026
  • Republic National Distributing — 428 workers, Ashland; notice April 23, 2026, effective June 21, 2026
  • Owens & Minor (Avid Medical, LLC) — 419 workers, Toano; notice September 16, 2026, effective November 25, 2026
  • Bechtel Power — 200 workers, Reston; notice September 15, 2026, effective November 16, 2026
  • Carry-On-Trailer Inc — 179 workers, Montross; notice September 30, 2026, effective November 29, 2026

Notable: several of the largest recent filings are still ahead of their effective dates — Owens & Minor (419, November 25), Bechtel Power (200, November 16), and Carry-On-Trailer (179, November 29) all land in the nationally heavy November window, while Crothall Healthcare's 545-worker Richmond filing lands on October 31, the single heaviest week nationally. One entry in the archive, AeroFarms (133 workers, Ringgold), is labeled rescinded and excluded from these totals.

The newest notices

The newest Virginia notice in the archive is dated October 7, 2026: The Washington Post, reporting 118 workers in Springfield, VA, effective December 31, 2026 — a closure filing. Most WARN notices cover dozens rather than hundreds of workers, and headline totals are built from many small events like this one.

Official records vs. the full archive

The figures above come from the full imported archive, which holds 2,189 non-cancelled Virginia WARN notices reporting 254,709 workers in total. That archive mixes two kinds of records: 1,132 direct government filings and 1,057 attributed secondary reports.

Looking only at official filings over the last 365 days, the archive contains 71 eligible Virginia notices reporting 8,388 affected workers, with recent official event types split between closures and layoffs. Both the narrower official series and the broader archive tell the same story for 2026: hotter than 2022–2024, cooler than the 2023 and 2025 peaks.

National context

Across the country, the Layoff Atlas 90-day window currently tracks 701 notices reporting 65,974 workers, with 33 counts unavailable (data updated October 23, 2026). The top states by reported workers are Washington (16,938), California (14,224), Illinois (4,626), Texas (3,652), and Ohio (3,180). The heaviest upcoming effective weeks nationally fall on October 31 (7,437 workers) and November 14 (8,404 workers), followed by November 21 (6,925) and November 28 (5,751). Virginia's 13 notices with future effective dates will land somewhere in that national schedule.

How to read these numbers

A few cautions before drawing conclusions:

  • These are reported plans, not confirmed job losses. A WARN notice is an advance filing; the actual number of people who lose work can end up lower (through attrition or rescinded plans), and filings can be cancelled.
  • WARN coverage is not a census of layoffs. Only layoffs meeting the size and timing thresholds trigger a filing, and reporting rules vary by state. Small employers and sub-threshold cuts never appear, so missing coverage is not zero layoffs.
  • The Virginia archive combines official state records with labeled secondary reports. Company names are grouped from normalized employer names; aliases preserve the exact names from the original filings, and grouping does not establish ownership.

What to watch

Three things will determine how 2026 ends for Virginia: whether the fourth-quarter filing pace matches 2025's heavy fourth quarter, how many of the 13 notices with future effective dates take effect on schedule, and whether the nationally heavy weeks in late October and mid-November include significant Virginia events.
