How to Add a Custom Domain to Your Vercel App (Free SSL Included)

You deployed to Vercel. Your app works. The URL looks like this:

my-portfolio-git-main-a7k2x.vercel.app
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

That is a deployment URL, not a product URL. If you want people to take your project seriously — or if you want to put it on a resume, share it on social media, or send it to a client — it needs a real domain.

Here is how to set that up, from zero to live HTTPS, in under five minutes.

Option 1: The traditional way (Vercel dashboard)

Vercel has built-in custom domain support. Here is the standard process:

Step 1: Buy a domain from a registrar (Namecheap, Google Domains, Cloudflare, etc.). This costs $8–15/year for a .dev or .com.

Step 2: In the Vercel dashboard, go to your project → Settings → Domains. Add your domain.

Step 3: Vercel will give you DNS records to add. Go to your registrar and add either:

  • An A record pointing to 76.76.21.21
  • A CNAME record pointing to cname.vercel-dns.com

Step 4: Wait for DNS propagation. This can take anywhere from a few minutes to 48 hours — though it is usually under an hour.

Step 5: Vercel automatically provisions an SSL certificate via Let's Encrypt. Once DNS resolves, HTTPS just works.

This process is well-documented and reliable. But it has friction points that trip up beginners:

  • DNS records are confusing if you have never configured them before. A records, CNAME records, TTL values — it is a lot of terminology for someone who just wants a URL.
  • Propagation delays are unpredictable. You make the change, and then you wait. Sometimes it is instant. Sometimes you are refreshing for an hour wondering if you made a mistake.
  • You need to buy a domain first. For a weekend project or a prototype, $12/year feels like a commitment.

Option 2: Skip the DNS configuration entirely

If you want a professional URL without buying a domain or touching DNS records, DomainDock handles the entire process.

Step 1: Pick a subdomain on digitalweb.host. Something like my-portfolio.digitalweb.host.

Step 2: Enter your Vercel deployment URL as the target.

Step 3: Done. Your app is live at my-portfolio.digitalweb.host with automatic HTTPS.

No registrar. No DNS records. No propagation wait. No certificate management.

The URL goes from:

my-portfolio-git-main-a7k2x.vercel.app
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

to:

my-portfolio.digitalweb.host
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

That second URL is something you can put on a business card, share on Twitter, or send to a recruiter without explaining what Vercel is.

When to use which approach

Buy your own domain when:

  • This is a real product or business that needs its own brand
  • You want a .com or .dev that matches your project name exactly
  • You plan to maintain this project long-term

Use a custom domain with free SSL subdomain when:

  • You want a clean URL for a side project, portfolio, or prototype
  • You do not want to deal with DNS configuration
  • You need it live in seconds, not hours
  • You are not ready to commit $12/year to a domain name

Both approaches give you HTTPS. Both give you a professional-looking URL. The difference is how much setup you want to do.

Bringing your own domain to DomainDock

If you already own a domain, DomainDock handles that too. Point your domain's DNS to DomainDock, and it manages the routing and SSL certificate automatically.

This gives you the best of both worlds: your own branded domain, with zero certificate management and instant routing to any deployment URL — Vercel, Netlify, Railway, Render, or anything else with an HTTPS endpoint.

The five-minute version

Your Vercel app deserves a URL that does not look like a CI artifact. Whether you buy a domain and configure DNS yourself, or use a tool that handles it automatically, the upgrade from deployment URL to product URL is the single highest-leverage step you can take for your project's credibility.

The app is already built. The hard part is done. Give it a real address.

DomainDock routes any deployment to a clean URL with automatic HTTPS. Free subdomains on digitalweb.host, or bring your own domain. Set up your custom domain in under 30 seconds.
