One of the things that made my last onboarding experience nice was not being introduced to everyone all at once. At previous jobs, I was given tours of the entire office, introduced to 30+ people at a time and generally couldn't remember it all, so it ended up being pretty useless.
At my current job, I was introduced to the 4-5 people I'd be working directly with, then given a more proper introduction to other people in the company later on in the coming days/weeks as I needed to interact with them.
Pacing is a huge thing, you can't know everything in the first week.
That's a great idea. I've met plenty of new starters being introduced around the office and it's always laughed off with 'there'll be a test on names at the end of the tour!' or 'hope you're noting down everyone's names'
This is not only overwhelming for the new team member but, as you rightly point out, a waste of time.
