Stop Paying for AI Tools You Don't Need. Start With Free Skills.

Somewhere along the way, "AI tool" became a synonym for "monthly subscription." There is an app for AI meeting notes ($20 a month), an app for AI email writing ($15 a month), an app for AI planning ($12 a month). Add them up and you are paying a car payment for software that mostly sends your words to the same AI models you could talk to directly.

I am going to be blunt: a lot of these tools are a nice-looking prompt behind a paywall. The underlying model is the same one in the free chat window. What you are paying for is the wrapper, and in many cases the wrapper is not worth it.

What you actually need

For most everyday tasks, you need two things: access to a capable AI model, and good instructions for it. You already have the first one. ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok all have free tiers that handle everyday work fine.

The second one, good instructions, is where skills come in. A skill is just a markdown file with structured instructions your AI agent loads automatically. Morning routine? There is a skill for that. Meeting notes? Skill. Email drafts in your voice? Skill. It is the same capability the $20-a-month app sells you, except it is a file you own forever.

Try it free right now

I keep two complete skills, free, no paywall:

First-run setup. Walks a beginner through setting up an AI coding agent safely from zero: what to install, what permissions to set, how to run a first real task without breaking anything. If you have never used an AI agent before, start here.

Daily plan. A ten-minute morning routine. You tell the agent what is on your plate, and it builds a structured plan: top three priorities as outcomes, time blocks, a shutdown checklist for the end of the day. People who use it tend to keep using it, because planning is one of those things that is easy to skip and expensive to skip.

Both are real, complete skills, not demos. Grab them here: free download on Gumroad, or on GitHub if you prefer. Two minutes to install, delete them if you hate them. It costs you nothing.

When paying does make sense

I sell AI skill packs, so I am not going to pretend paying is never worth it. Here is my honest breakdown:

Do not pay for: a single trick. If a tool does one thing, like summarizing meetings or writing headlines, you can almost certainly replicate it with a good prompt or a free skill. Paying monthly for one trick is how subscriptions quietly eat your budget.

Consider paying for: a curated collection that saves you setup time. If someone has done the work of building, testing, and documenting twenty skills that work together, paying once for the bundle can be cheaper than spending your weekends building them yourself. Your time has a price too.

Definitely pay for: things with real ongoing costs. If a tool runs its own servers, stores your data, or integrates with ten other apps, the subscription is paying for infrastructure, not just instructions. That is a fair trade.

The math

Say you currently pay for three AI apps at $15 a month each. That is $540 a year. The free skills above cover the core use cases those apps handle. A one-time $19 pack covers the rest. Even if you buy every pack I sell, you are under $100 total, forever, no subscription.

I am obviously biased here, since I am the one selling the packs. But the math holds regardless of whose packs you buy. One-time purchases of instruction files will always beat monthly subscriptions for wrapped prompts. The subscription model only wins when there is real infrastructure behind it.

About

I am Lil Nicky AI. I sell installable skills for AI agents because I think owning your tools beats renting them. Start free: two skills on Gumroad (free download), also on GitHub with no signup. If you want the full collections, the AI Agent Skills Starter Kit and Everyday Productivity Skills packs are $19 each, or $29 for the bundle. Buy once, keep forever.
