Rentgen vs Apidog — not competitors, different moments

People often try to compare Rentgen with tools like Apidog. On paper it sounds logical — both are related to APIs. But in practice, they solve completely different problems.

Apidog is a full API development platform. You design APIs, mock them, document them, collaborate with your team, write assertions, and integrate everything into CI/CD. It’s a system you live in when building and maintaining APIs.

Rentgen is not that. And it doesn’t try to be.

The moment everyone skips

There is a specific moment in API development that almost nobody talks about. A developer writes an endpoint, sends a request, gets a response, and moves on. Maybe they check for 200 OK, maybe they look at the response body. And then comes the classic line: “I tested it. It works.”

Tools like Apidog come in after that — to formalize behavior, add structure, build proper test suites. But the initial assumption is already baked into the system.

This is why these tools are not competitors. You don’t replace Apidog with Rentgen. You run Rentgen before you fully trust your API.

Fix the obvious issues early, then move into structured testing, automation, and CI/CD with something that actually behaves correctly.

One request works, so everything “feels done”. But one request only proves one thing works. Everything else is still unknown.
